The Thomas Wright Institute (TWI) is a not-for-profit organisation based in Canberra, Australia that provides a range of consultation, training and support services for both non-government and government organisations. It also provides direct assessment and treatment services for children, young people and their families. The common thread in the work of TWI is the development of effective therapeutic and support services for clients with complex needs and challenging behaviours. Services are provided for organisations in the child welfare, education, disability, juvenile justice and mental health fields. Consultation and training is provided in any State or Territory whereas the direct treatment services of the Institute are provided in the Australian Capital Territory and surrounding areas of New South Wales.
TWI is an agency of the Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn and is part of the Marymead Child and Family Centre in Canberra. Marymead is a multi-service child and family agency providing residential care, foster care, family support/preservation, family access and contact, and parenting skills programs.
Marymead Child and Family Centre
TWI commenced operations in November 1999 and was officially opened in October 2000. It operates on a not-for-profit basis – any operational surplus is applied to support services for children and families. The schedule of fees for families is based on income levels and ability to pay.
The work of the Institute is undertaken by a small team of qualified and experienced staff
whilst other pracitioners (trainers, social workers, researchers, counsellors) are employed as Institute Associates on a part-time or project basis.
