The Institute is committed to playing an advocacy role for both clients and the services that assist them.
It seeks to fulfil this part of its mission by the writing of journal articles, conference presentations,
and by joining in partnerships with like-minded organisations. Institute staff members have close links with
the Child and Family Welfare Association of Australia
and the Australia and New Zealand Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers .
The Institute is committed to introducing new models for the provision of out-of-home care. In 2009 it sponsored an Australain tour from Martha Holden from the Residential Child Care Project (RCCP) at Cornell to speak about their model for therapeutic care, Children and Residential Experiences (CARE): Creating Conditions for Change. Cornell University Family Life Development Center
The CARE program works directly with agencies caring for children and young people to establish a safe, developmentally appropriate and trauma sensitive framework for practice that serves the best interest of the child. In 2010 TWI will be working with Cornell to introduce this model into agencies in Australia.
In 2011 TWI will be sponsoring an Australian tour by Dr. Larry Brendtro, author of many books and papers related to working with troubled young people, founding editor of the journal Reclaiming Youth and developer of the RAP and the Developmental Audit courses.
