Fr Thomas (Tom) Wright was a pioneer of social welfare services in the Australian Capital Territory. He was instrumental in establishing Catholic Social Services (now Centacare, ACT) and was its founding Director. When the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn assumed the management of Marymead, Fr Wright became the inaugural Chair of its Board of Management.
He was a passionate and effective advocate for families in need and played a leading role in the (Vietnamese) refugee re-settlement movement of the 1970’s. Fr Wright died in 1994. In taking his name, the Institute honours Fr Wright’s vision and commitment to people in need.
